Day 7 - Rest Day Maastricht

I woke this morn at 6am to the sound of a smoke alarm, judging by the argument outside it seems like the guys in the next room had been smoking - I then relived that Robert Green moment and can't decide whether it was worse than Scott Carsons or Paul Robinsons against Croatia. - not a great start to the day. Still I went back to sleep till 9am and have spent a lazy day wandering around Maastrict. In the morn I watched the "Maastricht Mootsie" which was a 15k running race around town.

In the aft I visited the underground caves (or to be technically correct mines as they are manmade). These are a labyrinth of tunnels where Marlstone has been quarryed for a few hunderd years. And then went back to my Botel for another couple of hours sleep. I did not sleep well the first few nights but now I'm sleeping like a log.

It was all ok but am looking forward to getting back on my bike tomorrow.

I'm going to climb my first "Alp" tomorrow - Thats what they call the hills in South Holland - the Dutch Alps. The highest point is 321m high which is at the Belgian/German/Dutch Border.

Stats so far
Total Distance 685k
Total Climb 4200m
Total Riding Time 29:40
Average speed - Don't know have not got calculator

  1. Glad sleep has finally caught up with you. I think it was affecting your calculating skills!! The girls in the previous blog must have been far younger than half your age!!
Also your phone must have a calculator.

Kate says Hi, I miss you, go for it!! England needs Theo Wilcott! Love from the Womens England Football Team future player.xx

  3. It was definitely worse than Robinson's! I went out on my bike yesterday for a couple of hours and felt like a complete charlatan having read your posts from day one. Keep it up and enjoy ;-)

  4. Ah, average "riding" speed ..... you asked for this. Your average speed is 23.1 Kph (14.4mph) but given that the wind is blowing west at say an average of 19 kph I calculate your average RIDING speed is 4 kph, in other words Paula could walk this quicker than you! Still you must be expending some energy washing those clothes .....

  5. Great comment Dave!! Keep the comments coming. With 10 followers and over 840 hits how come there are only a few comments each day? Brendan really wants to hear your thoughts and what you are up to as long as you don't mention anything "Green"!

  9. Hi Brendan, sounds as though it is a great experience. I know we can't mention GREEN, bur are you missing the green green grass of home.

Southampton are interested in Brentford's full back Ryan Dickson, he is the one who supplied the crosses for both of our equalising goals in the two 1-1 draws last season.

  12. Glad I'm making this blog more international. That must be me from...
    ...Germany...
    ...Saudi...
    ...and now from Bahrain airport...
...just to add one more country to the list.
Why is it that the routes Brendan's planned in Germany seem a lot hillier and longer than the others? Am I just paranoid?
I have a feeling that Ali's washing machine is going to come in for some (ab)use from the famous underpants ths weekend.
Interesting comments on the ladies in the windows. One establishment in Berlin - keen to advertise its green credentials (or just keen to advertise) - recently announced a 5 Euro discount for anyone turning up on a bike.

  16. Hi Brendan – just got first look at the blog this evening & must say I had not quite realised the magnitude of what you have set yourself – well done, very impressed.
Having read through the highlights of the journey & comments so far I think that you should broaden your daily stat summary to include a nutritional supplement section, i.e.:-
Best beer today (& from which establishment)
Best local cake / pastry (& why)
I feel that you may have plenty of source material for this section…….

PS Shame about the football but at least that's one British spillage the Americans won't be moaning about...
